Varicocele Treatment in Dhaka: Symptoms, Diagnosis, Cost & When to See a Doctor
Worried About Varicocele?
Understand the Symptoms, Tests, Treatment Options & Costs
Have you noticed a soft, twisted swelling above your testicle — something people often describe as a “bag of worms”? You may be dealing with ভেরিকোসিল (varicocele). This is one of the most common causes of scrotal swelling and, in some men, it can be linked to বন্ধ্যাত্ব (male infertility).
Many men feel shy about talking through অণ্ডকোষের থলি (scrotum) problems, even with their own doctor. You do not need to feel that way.
This page is a starting point for people in Dhaka. It helps you understand whether a varicocele assessment may be right for you, what the next steps usually involve, and how to book a consultation with Dr. Muhammad Nazrul Islam.

What Is Varicocele?
ভেরিকোসিল (varicocele) is the enlargement of veins inside the অণ্ডকোষের থলি (scrotum). These veins normally drain blood away from the testicle. When the valves (ভাল্ভ) inside them do not work well, blood pools and the veins swell — much like varicose veins in the legs.
Varicocele is common, and it often causes no serious symptoms. Many men never need treatment. But for some, it brings discomfort, a change in testicle size, or difficulty conceiving — and that is when a proper assessment matters.
Common Symptoms (ভেরিকোসিলের লক্ষণ)
Many men have no symptoms at all. When symptoms do appear, the most common ones include:
👁️ A soft, twisted “bag of worms” feeling above the testicle, especially while standing (দাঁড়ানো অবস্থায়)
⚡ A dull ache or dragging feeling that worsens by the end of the day and eases when you lie down
🏋️ Heaviness or discomfort, especially after long standing or heavy work
📉 One testicle looking smaller than before (testicular atrophy) — important in teenagers
👶 Difficulty conceiving, or a low result on a সেমেন অ্যানালাইসিস (semen analysis)
These signs can overlap with other scrotal conditions, so symptoms alone do not confirm a varicocele. A proper examination is important.

⚠️ Emergency Warning (জরুরি সতর্কতা)
Sudden, severe testicular pain is a medical emergency — not a typical varicocele sign.
If you feel sudden, severe testicular pain — especially with swelling, nausea, or vomiting — this may signal a serious condition such as testicular torsion (টেস্টিকুলার টরশন), not varicocele. Varicocele pain is usually dull and gradual.
When in doubt, treat sudden severe pain as an emergency and seek care right away.
Is Varicocele Serious?
For most men, varicocele is not dangerous or life-threatening. Many live with it for years without complications. Still, it can matter in a few ways:
- It is a common identifiable cause of male infertility (বন্ধ্যাত্ব)
- In some cases, it may lead to gradual testicular shrinkage
- When present, chronic pain can affect daily life
A proper assessment helps clarify what your situation means for you.
How Is Varicocele Diagnosed?
Assessment usually starts with a simple conversation and a physical examination. In some cases, a scrotal ultrasound (ডপলার আল্ট্রাসনোগ্রাফি) may be used to support the assessment or clarify uncertain findings. Diagnosis is understood in the context of your symptoms and examination — a scan alone does not decide everything.
You do not need to know any medical terms to begin. Simply describe what you feel.

Does Varicocele Need Treatment?
Not always. The right path depends on your individual situation:
- No symptoms and no fertility concerns: often just monitored
- Mild discomfort: may be managed with supportive measures and simple advice
- Persistent or troublesome pain: a doctor may discuss treatment after proper assessment
- Fertility concerns with an abnormal semen analysis: treatment may be considered
- Testicular shrinkage in teenagers: usually assessed promptly to protect future fertility
Not every varicocele needs surgery. Any decision should follow a full assessment.
Treatment Options Overview
Treatment is discussed only when it is genuinely appropriate. At a high level, options may include:
• Observation and follow-up — for men with no symptoms or fertility concerns
• Surgical repair — may be discussed when symptoms, testicular changes, or fertility concerns are significant
• Other procedure-based approaches — considered in selected cases, depending on the individual assessment
The best option depends on your symptoms, examination findings, fertility goals, age, and the doctor’s assessment. This is best discussed directly during a consultation.

Varicocele and Male Fertility (ভেরিকোসিল ও বন্ধ্যাত্ব)
Varicocele may be associated with reduced semen quality in some men. However, not all varicoceles affect fertility, and the picture is different for each person and couple.
If conception is taking longer than expected, a proper assessment may include a discussion of semen analysis (সেমেন অ্যানালাইসিস) and the broader fertility picture for both partners. Treatment decisions should be individualized, and improvement in semen results or pregnancy chances cannot be guaranteed.

Varicocele Treatment Cost in Dhaka
The cost of varicocele assessment or treatment in Dhaka can vary. It usually depends on factors such as:
- Consultation and physical examination
- Ultrasound or other tests, if needed
- Whether any treatment is recommended, and which method
- Hospital or facility charges
- Anesthesia and follow-up needs
- How straightforward or complex the case is
For a current, case-specific estimate, please contact the assistant directly after an assessment.
Recovery, in Brief (সুস্থ হওয়া)
Recovery depends on whether treatment is needed and on the method used. Many patients return to light activity within a few days, but recovery time varies from person to person. Your own surgeon’s instructions should always take priority over general online guidance.

When Should You See a Doctor?
Consider booking a consultation if you notice:
- Persistent scrotal ache, heaviness, or discomfort
- A visible or feelable swelling above the testicle
- One testicle appearing smaller than before
- Difficulty conceiving after a year of trying, or sooner if you are concerned
- Any new scrotal swelling, especially after age 40
Remember the emergency warning above: sudden, severe testicular pain is different from varicocele — এমন হলে দ্রুত জরুরি বিভাগে যান (go to the emergency department immediately).

Frequently Asked Questions (সচরাচর জিজ্ঞাসা)
Is varicocele dangerous?
In most cases, varicocele is not dangerous. In some men it may affect fertility, and in a few cases it may lead to testicular shrinkage. A proper assessment helps clarify your situation.
Does varicocele always require surgery?
No. Many men with varicocele have no symptoms and need no treatment. Treatment is discussed only in selected cases — such as troublesome pain, fertility concerns, or testicular shrinkage — after proper assessment.
Can treatment fix infertility caused by varicocele?
Not always. In some men, treatment may be discussed as part of a broader fertility assessment. However, not every varicocele affects fertility, and improvement in semen results or pregnancy cannot be guaranteed.
Can varicocele come back after treatment?
Recurrence is possible but relatively uncommon. Your treating doctor can explain what to expect based on your individual case.
Does testicular pain always mean varicocele?
No. Testicular pain can have several causes, including hydrocele (হাইড্রোসিল) and, in emergencies, testicular torsion. A proper examination is needed to determine the cause.
